Gilles Simon of France was back in action after his quarterfinal appearance at the Australian Open. Simon took on German player, Phillipp Kohlschreiber and beat the German 7-5 7-6(1) in 109 minute match. The Frenchman will meet Mario Ancic in the second round, who enjoyed a routine win over German Rainer Schuettler 7-5 6-2.
