Second-seed David Ferrer should have had an easier time against Austrian Koellerer in his opener today in Umag. He instead had more of a battle on his hands when the world no. 82 was able to sneak off with the second set. The Spaniard was able to wrap up the match and beat Koellerer 6-1 6-7(2) 6-3.
Ferrer will now encounter Nicolas Massu of Chile in the second round. They two players have played twice before in ATP competition with Ferrer winning both of them.
