Top-seed Fernando Verdasco had to rally to beat Italian Fabio Fognini. The Spaniard eventually overcame the world no. 57 2-6 6-4 6-0 in just under two hours of play. The world no. 10 will play Pole Lukasz Kubot in the second round.

Once a doubles specialist, Kubot had a good year last year and is off to a promising start this year. The Pole is enjoying his best career ranking at world no. 48 to date. Kubot could be trouble for Verdasco if he does not clean it his act by tomorrow.

Lukasz Kubot and Oliver Marach captured their fourth-career title together. The Austro-Polish duo gave Potito Starace and Horacio Zeballos a 6-4 6-0 beating in the doubles final yesterday in Santiago. Kubot and Marach will play next week in Brazil on the second leg of the Latin American Swing.

To the delight of hometown fans, top-seed Novak Djokovic won the Serbian Open title by besting Lukasz Kubot of Poland in the final on Sunday 6-3 7-6(0). This is Djokovic’s second title of the year and his 13th career title. This should be a nice boost for the Serb to head into Madrid with.

Do not feel too bad for Lukasz. The lucky loser had a good run in the tournament and ended up the runner-up in singles. He later won the doubles title with his Austrian partner Oliver Marach over Swede Johan Brunstrom and Jean-Juliein Rojer from the Netherlands Antilles 6-2 7-6(3). The championship title now gives the pair two ATP doubles titles together.

Top-seed Novak Djokovic debuted in his second round match with Janko Tipsarevic in an all-Serbian affair. The ATP world no. 63 was able to take a set from Djokovic, who is currently having a good clay-court season. The current world no. 3 took care of business in the final set by winning at love and outlasting Tipsarevic 6-2 4-6 6-0.

Djokovic advances into the next round where he will play another Serb Viktor Troicki, who had a routine win over Marcel Granollers 6-3 6-4. Troicki is currently 1-0 over Djokovic in their head-to-head match-up. Their last meeting was on clay in Croatia in 2007.

On the other side of the draw, third-seed Igor Andreev retired after just five games due to a rib injury. Lucky loser Lukasz Kubot now advances into the round of 16 and will face Kristof Vliegen, who upset eighth-seed Christophe Rochus in an all-Belgian battle.
