Defending champion, Igor Kunitsyn will defend his title this year. He will participate in the Moscow tournament along with top-seeds Nikolay Davydenko, Victor Hanescu, Mikhail Youzhny, Igor Andreev and Pablo Cuevas. In the 18 years of this tournament, Russians have dominated singles by winning 12 of the 18 titles awarded.
Top-seed Nikolay Davydenko will try to win this title for a fourth time coming off of his win in Shanghai. He will also try to go for his fifth title of the season, thus tying Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray as the top title holders of the year.
Marat Safin will also participate in the tournament for the final time. The veteran has never won this title and was runner up last year. I am sure he will be a sentimental favorite of the crowd. Janko Tipsarevic, Fabio Fognini, Evgeny Korolev and the retiring Fabrice Santoro round out the draw.

Defending champion, Dmitry Tursunov will not defend his title this year, as he is out because of ankle surgery. Gael Monfils tops the seeds and is the hometown and crowd favorite. Mostly French and German players join him this week.
Philip Kohlschreiber, Paul-Henri Mathieu, Philipp Petzschner, Fabrice Santoro, Benjamin Becker, Andreas Beck and Ivan Ljubicic round out the other seeds. Richard Gasquet will also be on hand to try to return to form. Fabrice Santoro puts in his last appearance at the tournament since he will retire at the end of the year. On the doubles side, Arnaud Clement and Michael Llodra are back together and will defend their title for the second-straight time.
As stated before, it is harder to tell the clear favorites, as injuries and burnout become the tale of the season. This should be an exciting tournament, as there are plenty of quality players duking it out this week.

Hometown favorite, Victor Hanescu earns top-seed honors and will be the one to beat. He will enjoy audience support and will have the incentive of not letting them down. Nicolas Almagro, Juan Monaco and Igor Andreev will be on hand to mix it up with Hanescu.
As the season winds down, it is harder to tell the clear favorites, as injuries and just burnout become the tale of the end of the season. We shall see who steps up this week in Bucharest.

This is the final grand slam of the year, and Roger Federer will go for his sixth-consecutive US Open title. Between Rafael Nadal’s rehabilitation and everyone else just flaking out, this is the first tournament in two years where I am pretty certain Roger Federer will win. Federer is the most consistent player on tour at the moment. He has also won 16 grand slam titles, so he knows he has that advantage over the others in the slams, with the exception of a top-form Nadal.
Once again, Federer has an easy quarter where he could possibly take meet Robin Soderling or Nikolay Davydenko in the quarterfinals. Davydenko had problems this week in New Haven with his wrists, so he should not really be a threat. Soderling is capable of being dangerous, but it looks like he does not know it yet.
Federer’s possible semifinal matchup could be with Novak Djokovic or Andy Roddick. We know Djokovic is still flakey, and Roddick just cannot beat the Swiss champion for a host of reasons. This quarter of the draw is also chalked full of people. Tommy Haas and Fernando Verdasco should be in the mix. Anyone of the fore-mentioned players could end up in the semifinals, so this is the hardest part of the draw.
Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray anchor the second half of the draw. Nadal has a good quarter for his predicament since he is still trying to find his original form. His first-round match is with Richard Gasquet, who is probably rustier than Nadal is, so that is a good scenario for him. In the round of 16, the Spaniard could possibly have to contend with Gael Monfils. The Musketeer has been tame this year, but he could start feeling it at any time.
The top half of his quarter is littered with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Tomas Berdych and Fernando Gonzalez. These four players are going to have to duke it out for the chance to possibly play Nadal in the quarterfinals. Nadal’s trouble begins here because he has to meet one of them. The old Nadal would have no problem, but the more vulnerable Nadal could have trouble with anyone of these four.
Murray’s quarter is kind of precarious. This first part of it will be very manageable, but his possible quarterfinal meeting with Juan Martin del Potro could be a giant headache for him. Whoever is left standing will have to possibly deal with Nadal -- who could find his form at anytime -- and then head to the final. For this reason, it is probably better for Nadal that he is seated third rather than second.
At the end of the day, the tournament is really Federer’s to lose. Nadal is still nowhere near where he needs to be to be a real threat. The Spaniard probably will not be better until next season to be realistic. When he was playing in Cincinnati, the announcers pointed out that he was still gingerly moving on his forehand side.
As for Murray, he should win this tournament, but he is going to have to stop flaking out in the slams. He wins everything else, so it is time. If we are going to have to be subject to Brad Gilbert, Darren Cahill and Robbie Koening go on-and-on about him, the Scotsman better get it done this year. I still think he should have won Wimbledon this year, but he pulled a flakey-jake routine.
It would be nice if Verdasco found his Australian Open form. It would also be nice to see Andy Roddick solve his Federer riddle. It would be really nice to be pleasantly surprised about Nadal’s form. It would be really, really nice if Juan Martin del Potro took the whole enchilada. I guess a girl can dream. Let’s hope this fortnight is exciting and chalked full of surprises.

Andy Murray will be on hand to defend his title in Cincinnati. He will have his work cut out for him because his half of the draw is chalked full of contenders.
He could meet Juan Martin del Potro in quarterfinals. The Scotsman has had the Argentine’s number, but it is only a matter of time before del Potro turns the corner and surprises the defending champion. Del Potro did have physical problems during their Rogers Cup match, so he might be less of a threat this week. Murray could also have to deal with Federer in the semifinals.
Federer’s quarter of the draw is as difficult as Murray’s. The Swiss champ could have to contend with Robin Soderling or Andy Roddick in the quarterfinals. He then, of course, could meet with Murray or the surging del Potro in the semifinals.
Rafal Nadal has a pretty good draw. For someone who needs to play their way into contention, this draw could be a good way for the Spaniard to make it to the semifinals or finals because he desperately needs the points. He may have to see Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or Fernando Gonzalez in the quarterfinals and then maybe Nikolay Davydenko or Novak Djokovic in the semifinals.

The French Open is finally here and caps off the European clay-court season. Rafael Nadal will try to go for a record-breaking, fifth-consecutive title. He should be able to do it if he is healthy over the next two weeks.
The only two players who can stop him are Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer -- I would pick Djokovic over the two if I was forced to. It would be great to see Nadal and Djokovic battling it out in the final to change things up.
Nadal’s quarter contains Fernando Verdasco and Stanislas Wawrinka. Verdasco and Wawrinka will have to duke it out in the round of 16 to possibly play Nadal in the quarterfinals. Nadal should still be able to take either one of them.
The Spaniard then could have to meet Andy Murray in the semifinals. Of the top four, Murray is the player most likely to be upset, as clay is his weakest surface. To play Nadal, he will have to get past Fernando Gonzalez, his biggest obstacle, in the quarterfinals. The Chilean has a good chance of upsetting the Scot on clay this year.
Of course Federer has the privilege of having an easy quarter, as he usually does in the grand slams. Federer could meet Tomas Berdych in the round of 16. The Czech gave Federer trouble at the Australian Open and should have won the match but could not seal the deal. Federer’s other challenge could be Andy Roddick in the quarterfinals. Roddick still his Rogeritus, so the Swiss maestro should have an easy time advancing into the semifinals, where he could meet Djokovic. This may be the battle he will lose this year if I may be so bold.
The Serb needs to be in shape and make sure that he does not stay on the court too long over the next two weeks. Djokovic’s part of the draw is trickier. He could meet Juan Martin del Potro in the quarterfinals. The young Argentine has stepped his game up lately, so he might give the Serb some trouble. Even if del Potro loses, he might keep Djokovic on the court for a while and wear him down before a possible semifinal appearance with Federer – like Djokovic and Nadal in Madrid last week. Hopefully, the Serb has it together enough to make it to his maiden French Open final.

Rafael Nadal is the four-time defending champion and the one to beat this week. David Nalbandian could be sta
nding in his way in the quarterfinals since he is the only person on the tour with a winning record against Nadal at 2-1.
The bottom half of Nadal’s side of the draw has Stanislas Wawrinka anchoring it. The Swiss had a good tournament in Monte-Carlo by making it to the semifinals. Nikolay Davydenko and Guillermo Canas are also in his quarter of the draw.
The other half of the draw has the other top Spaniards: Tommy Robredo, David Ferrer and Fernando Verdasco. They are playing for the opportunity to play Rafael Nadal in the final. Robredo, the 2004 champion, has to get passed Ferrer, last year’s finalist, in the quarterfinals. Verdasco’s possible quarterfinal could be difficult because he could have to contend with Fernando Gonzalez or Juan Monaco.
Veterans Juan Carlos Ferrero and Gaston Gaudio were given wildcards and will put in an appearance this week.

We have now seen everyone in action last week in Indian Wells. Basically, the only players playing at another level are Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Andy Murray. Novak Djokovic is in a slump. He is capable of turning his game up and could snap out of this slump at any moment. The results could be similar to last week, except Murray is in Nadal's part of the draw.
We could be looking at the Nadal-Federer rematch that everyone else wants. The only person able to stop Federer from reaching the final is Djokovic, but he needs to get it together and quick.The rest of the field has yet to prove they can compete with the top four. I hope someone does, but I have been disappointed so far this year.

The top 32 players are scheduled to compete, except for Nicolas Almagro in this 128-person draw. This is the first tournament with the top players since the Australian Open. Everyone is looking forward to another possible Nadal-Federer final after their last meeting in the Australian Open.
The top four are favored, of course. Last year’s champion, Novak Djokovic will be on hand to defend his title. The Serbian has not played well this year but did manage to win his first title of the year in Dubai.
Roger Federer was out with a back injury for six weeks and will be back with a new coach, Darren Cahill. He has won this tournament three times in three consecutive years 2004, 2005, and 2006. It will be interesting to see if his new coach might help him with his Nadal problem.
Andy Murray started the year out well by winning two titles but lost to Fernando Verdasco in the round of 16 of the Australian Open. The Scotsman hit a roundblock in Dubai where he had to pull out because of a virus. This illness also prevented him from playing for the British Davis Cup team last week.
Rafael Nadal should be tough to beat. The Spaniard started out the year with an Australian Open win and managed to administer two serious beatdowns on the Serbian Davis Cup team last week. He also won the tournament in 2007.
Juan Martin Del Potro, Gilles Simon and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga are looking to get into the mix with the top four, but Del Potro and Simon are not starting off the year in the most convincing fashion. Tsonga is off to a good start with two titles and could give Murray some trouble in the quarterfinals. Marin Cilic and Radek Stepanek are also playing well this year, so they might also be in the hunt.
The standout of the year has been Fernando Verdasco who had an epic semifinal against Rafael Nadal at the Australian Open. The Spaniard had been training with Andre Agassi’s former trainer, Gil Reyes and began to play like a top five player. He went out with an ankle injury in February and has not played since the Australian Open. Let's hope he has fully recovered and picks up where he left off. I would not mind a Nadal-Verdasco final.
Hopefully, some other players step it up and shake up the tournament.

The player to watch is Tommy Robredo, who has won the last two titles in the swing and made it to the semifinals in Chile. Will Tommy make it three for three?
Robredo may have some problems this week because he has a tough draw. He could meet Juan Monaco in the round of 16, Jose Acasuso in the quarterfinals, Gael Monfils or Carlos Moya in the semis, and then Almagro or Nalbandian in the final. If Tommy pulls it off this week, then look out Rafa in Monte Carlo (just kidding).
