Novak Djokovic had a routine win over Austrian Jurgen Melzer 6-1 6-4 after just 66 minutes of play. Today's victory was a much easier win for the Serb after yesterday's match with Florent Serra where he had to save five match points before securing the victory.

Djokovic advances to the semifinals to play qualifier Olivier Rochus, who beat Benjamin Becker. Rochus is 2-0 over the Serb. The last time the two players met was in 2005 when Djokovic was just 17 years old, and a lot has changed since then.

Thursday’s Order of Play

The Germans are playing on their home soil in Halle, Germany. To the delight of the hometown fans, the Germans won every match they played in today. There are currently seven Germans still active in the draw.

Wildcard Mischa Zverev saved two match points before rallying to upset fifth-seed Tomas Berdych. Philipp Kohlschreiber took out sixth-seed Dmitry Tursunov. Another wildcard, Benjamin Becker upset countryman and eighth-seed Rainer Schuettler.

The biggest upset of the day was the Tommy Haas victory over fourth-seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. He triumphed over the Frenchman 6-3 7-6(3) after 79 minutes of play. The current ATP world no. 41 has struggled with injuries, and his ranking dropped to no. 87 last March. Over the last month, he is looking like he has recovered and is back in shape. Last week, Haas made it to the round of 16 at Roland Garros, where he eventually lost to Roger Federer.

Haas now advances to the quarterfinals to play fellow German Mischa Zverev. The two players have never met in ATP competition.

On the doubles side, Nicolas Kiefer and Mischa Zverev defeated Novak Djokovic and Viktor Troicki in dominate fashion 6-1 6-1. They head to the semifinals and await the winner of the Gicquel/Tsonga-Beck/Chiudinelli match.

Fourth-seed Gael Monfils and seventh-seed Marat Safin have both pulled out of the tournament. Monfils suffered a wrist injury – possibly from all the diving from his previous match. With the Frenchman’s pullout, Steve Darcis received a walkover into the quarterfinals. Safin pulled out due to a back injury and was replaced by lucky loser Rik De Voest of South African.

French qualifier Nicolas Mahut took out fifth-seed Marin Cilic. Juan Carlos Ferrero posted win #401 and took out eleventh-seed Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-4 6-4. Ferrero will play the Belgian qualifier Xavier Malisse in a battle of the veterans. The two have surprisingly have never met in an ATP match.

On the doubles side, second-seeds Mike and Bob Bryan were taken out by British wildcards Colin Flemings and Ken Skupski (pictured). Wesley Moodie and Mikhail Youzhny took out the third-seeds Bruno Soares and Kevin Ullyett. The Croatian duo over Ivo Karlovic and Lovro Zovko upset Brazilians Marcelo Melo and Andre Sa.

Andy Murray, Gilles Simon and Ivo Karlovic restored order on the singles side by getting through their second-round matched. Simon was able to get passed wildcard and Bulgarian phenom Grigor Dimitrov 7-6(7) 7-6(5). He will now face Mikhail Youzhny, who got passed Marcos Baghdatis in the round of 16. Youzhny leads their head-to-head matchup 2-0 and beat the Frenchman at Wimbledon in 2007.

Juan Carlos Ferrero lead Sebastian Grosjean 6-2 2-1 before the veteran Frenchman retired with a shoulder injury from the match. The 29-year-old former world no. one posted his 400th win today. Next up for Ferrero is Paul-Henri Mathieu, another French veteran of the tour. The two players are even at 1-1 in their head-to-head match up.

Roger Federer pulled out of the tournament because of exhaustion. This now leaves the draw wide open and gives the second-seed Novak Djokovic a nice opening for his first grass title.

All of the seeded players advanced today, except for Fernando Verdasco. German Philipp Petzschner sent the Spaniard packing by upsetting the third-seed 3-6 7-6(5) 6-4 in front his hometown audience. He and three other Germans advanced today. In the second round, Petzschner will play Olivier Rochus, who double bageled Spaniard Fernando Vicente 6-0 6-0. The two have never met in ATP competition.

Third-seeds Leander Paes and Lukas Dlouhy overcame a one set deficit to surpass Wesley Moodie and Dick Norman 3-6 6-3 6-2. It is their second title together and their first Grand Slam doubles title win.

The Croatian pair of Marin Draganja and Dino Marcan beat out the Guilherme Clezar of Brazil and Liang-Chi Huang of Taiwan 6-3 6-2 for the boy’s doubles title. On the singles side, Swede Daniel Berta overtook Frenchman Gianni Mina for the boy’s singles title 6-1 3-6 6-3.

It is encouraging to see Croatia and Sweden with some new blood. We shall see if we hear more from these youngsters in the future.

Fernando Gonzales has advanced to the semifinals by upsetting third-seed Andy Murray 6-3 3-6 6-0 6-4 after two hours and fifteen minutes of play. Gonzales has quietly gone through the draw and has now clocked in his best performance at Roland Garros -- he made it to the quarterfinals in 2003 and last year.

Gonzales will now meet Robin Soderling in the semifinals. The Chilean is 4-3 against the Swede and has won their last four meetings. Soderling has turned up his play in the last few days, so we will see if he can keep it up against Gonzalez.

Tommy Robredo is surprisingly the last Spaniard left in the draw. Robredo helped the Spanish cause today by taking out German Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-4 5-7 7-6(4) 6-2. The Spaniard now continues into the quarterfinals to play fifth-seed Juan Martin del Potro.

Del Potro is looking fierce of late and took out Frenchman and Musketeer, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in four sets. The 19 year old currently leads Robredo 1-0 in their career matchup. Their face off on Wednesday should be a good one.

Gael Monfils upset Andy Roddick 6-4 6-2 6-3 in just under two hours of play. The Frenchman now advances into the quarterfinlas to play Roger Federer, who went down to the wire with a resurgent Tommy Haas in five sets. Federer leads their head-to-head matchup 4-0.

Let’s hope La Monf get inspired by the home crowd on Wednesday.
